Department of Neurosurgery

The past decade has seen rapid strides being made in understanding the
brain and its connections. Most advancement. compared to any other
medical discipline has been made in field of neurosurgery. In addition
to maximal skill, finesse and precision that a Neurosurgeon requires,
technology plays an increasing important role in achieving
unimaginable successes. Neurosurgery has graduated from microscopes,
endoscopes to real time monitoring (Neuronavigation and intraoperative
MRI) and Gamma Knife. These are now minimal standard of care
requirements of neurosurgical setup.

Keeping pace with these rapid leaps, during the past two and half
years we have introduced various subspecialties of neurosurgery namely
endoscopic neurosurgery of brain, base of skull, spine and nerves),
complex spine fusions, micro neurosurgery, skull base surgery,
vascular surgery, functional neurosurgery and neurointensive critical
care. We have started a unique tradition of presenting the results of
our management (Neurosurgical Audit) in various forums for peer
review. Despite various constraints which the department has faced
from its inception, it has become a pioneering centre of excellence
for endoscopic and complex spine surgery. The spectrum of work
performed here has been acclaimed in various National and
International forums. BMHRC was proud to organize first Epilepsy
Surgery Workshop in India on 17th April 2005.

Neurosurgery owes its successes to the team of doctors, technicians
and staff who constitute it. It has been two and one half years when
Dr. Sudhir Dubey restarted the closed department of Neurosurgery.
After seven months Dr. Ravi Kumar also joined the department as
Professor and head. In the subsequent short span of time the
department has woken up from slumber and is now on State as well as
National Radar. Dr. Ravi Kumar worked for period of one year and
subsequently left for Consultant job in Australia. But the department
continues to flourish and has reached a case load of 400 operations
per year. The academic traditions have benefited the junior doctors
and now 5 of them are on their way of becoming certified neurosurgeons
in reputed institutes across the country. Support from sister
departments of Neurology including Neuro-rehabilitation (Dr. S. K.
Jain), Anesthesia (Dr. Pradeep Bhattacharya, Dr.Surabhi Sahai) and
Radiology (Dr K. Patel, Dr N. Mahindra) forms the backbone of our
department.
