Memorial Hospital & Research Centre)
“The Bhopal Gas Tragedy” in the early morning hours of December
3, 1984 was a catastrophe with no parallel in history. The accidental
leakage of Methyl Isocyanate gas left more than ten thousand people dead
and left about five hundred thousand people suffering from agonizing
injuries. The lungs, brains, eyes, muscles as well as gastro-intestinal,
neurological, reproductive and immune systems of those who survived were
severely affected.
“The Bhopal Hospital Trust” was established in London in 1992
with Sir Ian Percival as its sole trustee for construction of hospital for
gas victims, pursuant to order passed by Supreme Court. In 1998, the
construction of the hospital began. Its aim is to provide health benefits
to the gas victims free of cost. In addition as there is no good Super
specialty setup in 700kms radius, it also helps the general population by
providing health care at nominal cost.
“The Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre” and its “
Eight Outreach Health Centres” provide primary and
tertiary care to the gas victims. Since its commissioning in July 2000
more than 450,000 patients have been treated in the hospital.
